Foot & Ankle Surgery

Foot and ankle surgeons provide care for a wide variety of conditions, including bone fractures, tendon damage, ankle instability and arthritis. The physicians at Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery are also trained to detect the early stages of diseases that show warning signs in the feet and ankles, such as diabetes, arthritis and cardiovascular disease.

Common foot and ankle procedures performed at Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery include:

Ankle fracture surgery

Ankle fractures are common and surgery corrects acute deformities, improves function and speeds return to work and sports. Surgery is often recommended to someone who needs more than casting.

Achilles tendon surgery

The Achilles tendon is one of the longer tendons in the body and is often injured. Achilles tendonitis is a condition of inflammation of the tendon in back of the ankle. Surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon often involves sewing the tendon back together. There are two types of approaches that a surgeon may take. Talk with your physician about what method of surgery is right for you.

Bunion surgery

A bunion is a deformity that develops when the bone behind the big toe gets pushed outward sending the big toe toward the second toe causing discomfort and pain. The primary cause of bunions is ill-fitting shoes. During bunion surgery, the surgeon will make a small incision in the foot, cut out the bunion, and realign the bones. In some cases, a steel plate or pins may be inserted to ensure proper alignment.

Hammertoe surgery

Hammertoe occurs when the toe bends downward at the middle joint, causing it to resemble a hammer. Treatment usually depends on the stage of the condition. If surgery is recommend, your surgeon may make an incision in the toe to release or lengthen the tendon if the toe has some flexibility. If the toe is not flexible, an incision may be made to remove pieces of bone so that the bone can be straightened. A wire is then placed in the toe to help hold it straight while it heals.

Claw toe surgery

Claw toe is a muscle imbalance and occurs in the four smaller toes at the same time. The toes bend up at the joints where the toes and the foot meet, causing them to resemble claws. The deformity occurs as a result of a muscle imbalance, and tendon transfer or lengthening may be needed in order to enact a long-term correction and minimize the risk of recurrence.

Plantar fasciitis surgery

Plantar fasciitis, also called heel spur syndrome, is a painful condition caused by the inflammation of the think band of tissue, call the plantar fascia, that extends from the heel to the toes. Patients who have problems with their arches, either overly flat feet or high-arched feet, are more prone to developing plantar fasciitis. Your physician may recommend surgery if nonsurgical treatments have not worked and heel pain is restricting your activities.
