A Year in Review: 2021 Center for Disc Replacement at Texas Health Center for Diagnostics and Surgery

Texas Health Center for Diagnostics and Surgery

2021 was another strange year, but that didn’t keep Drs. Blumenthal, Guyer, Shellock, and Zigler, co-directors of the Center for Disc Replacement at Texas Health Center for Diagnostics and Surgery, from continuing their research and educational activities involving spine arthroplasty.

Leaders in Artificial Disc Replacement

At the Center for Disc Replacement at THCDS, we talk a lot about how we are dedicated to the advancement of artificial disc replacement surgery.  Being that the co-directors of the program performed some of the first disc replacement procedures in the United States more than 20 years ago, it's been their mission to continue to educate, research and perfect disc replacement surgery techniques and devices.  Over the years, they have participated in clinical trials, authored books and book chapters, presented their research to their peers at various medical conferences, and have continued to prove their dedication to  this motion preserving spine surgery.

2021 Center for Disc Replacement: Dedicated to Education, Research and Advancements

The Center for Disc Replacement Surgeons, Drs. Scott Blumenthal, Richard Guyer, Jack Zigler and Jessica Shellock, were busy in 2021.  Here's a little recap!

  • They were authors on 7 arthroplasty-related articles published in profession, peer-reviewed journals.

  • Published a book chapter.

  • Made 21 research presentations on total disc replacement at various conferences.

  • The team was honored that their research efforts netted 2 papers (of approximately 1,200 submissions) in the group of 21 selected as “Best Papers” at the North American Spine Society annual meeting in Boston.

  • Study on cervical disc replacement presented by Dr. Guyer was selected as the third best paper at the annual meeting of the Cervical Spine Research Society in Atlanta, Georgia.

  • Dr. Blumenthal’s primary focus was on the rare, but significant, problem of severe osteolysis occurring in some patients after cervical disc replacement that appears to be more common with one particular device.

  • Dr. Zigler co-authored a paper on the 7-year follow-up of patients receiving a lumbar TDR as part of an FDA trial.

  • Dr. Shellock continued to serve as the site Principle Investigator of the FDA-regulated SMART trial evaluating a new design of a cervical disc replacement.

  • All 4 surgeons participated as faculty for several courses teaching other surgeons about disc replacement and the technique to perform it.
